2026 Hallway Construction Progress at Holub Apartments in Iowa City, IA

Work on the common hallways is moving forward this summer as part of the larger interior renovation at Holub Apartments.

The photos on this page show the third floor in mid-construction. Crews are installing a decorative drop (suspended) ceiling and pairing it with new lighting, including a crystal drum chandelier in one of the main corridors. Some sections are still open while framing, wiring, and finish work continue. Other stretches already show the intended look: cleaner lines, better light, and finishes that feel more in keeping with a landmark building than a worn rental hallway.

This is common-area work, not unit work. The goal is the same as the rest of the project: keep the building’s 1875 character—high ceilings, solid construction, Northside presence—while bringing the shared spaces up to the same standard as the remodeled apartments. Hallways are the first thing residents and guests see. Updating them matters.

What residents and visitors can expect

  • Construction is phased by floor and section so the building stays usable.
  • Access to units is maintained; some temporary dust, noise, and routing around work zones is normal.
  • Lighting and ceiling work will leave the corridors brighter and more finished once complete.
  • The decorative ceiling and chandelier are part of treating the hallways as real architecture, not leftover service space.

Units themselves continue to be renovated on their own schedule—updated kitchens and baths, central air (SpacePak), secure keypad entry, and the other improvements already described on the site. Shared laundry and the building’s other amenities remain available.

Holub Apartments sits in the Slezak-Holub-Skarda complex on Iowa City’s Northside (primarily 308 N Linn Street and adjacent addresses). The building received local historic landmark designation in 2024. Under new ownership and management, renovations are meant to honor that history rather than erase it.
