Brief History

This spacious first-floor residence takes its name from the building’s founding family and its most celebrated early chapter.

In 1872, Bohemian immigrant Johann (John) Slezak purchased the lots at the corner of Bloomington and Linn Streets. By 1875 his son Joseph (Josef) Slezak completed the original two-story brick building that still forms the heart of today’s Holub Apartments complex. The second floor became Slezak’s National Hall (Národní Síň in Czech)—a lively cultural and social center for Iowa City’s large Bohemian community. It hosted dances, meetings of fraternal organizations, sporting events, entertainments, and even served as a polling place and part of the city’s 1876 centennial celebrations.

Over the next decade the Slezaks expanded the property into a full commercial hub that included a farmers’ hotel, restaurant, grocery/tavern, carriage house, and stable. The complex remained in the extended Slezak–Holub family for six generations before its recent transition to new ownership and careful restoration.

“The Grand Slezak” honors that founding family and the grand scale and community spirit of the original National Hall while celebrating this particular unit’s unusually large footprint (~2,800 sq ft), high ceilings, multiple entrances, and open central living area—qualities that echo the building’s historic role as a gathering place.

It is a living nod to one of Iowa City’s oldest and most significant Northside landmarks.
